SummerSlam is the event that every big fan of WWE awaits eagerly! SummerSlam is a professional wrestling pay-per-view event that takes place annually in the month of August. Being a fan of WWE, you must already know that SummerSlam is one of the four biggest events of WWE, including Royal Rumble, WrestleMania and Survivor Series. It all started back in 1998, in New York City, where the first event of SummerSlam took place.
Well, every year SummerSlam is the event that gains a lot of popularity and surely gives us moments that we can never forget. Here we are, with 10 WWE SummerSlam moments that we’ll never forget. Let’s have a look at the following:
1. 1988: THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR’S BLITZKRIEG
WWE Intercontinental Champion Honky Tonk Man was confident of defending Brutus Beefcake. As The Barber got injured, the Elvis impersonator was sure about the fight. As the scheduled fight was about to start, Honky Tonk Man grabbed the microphone with confidence and requested loudly ‘Give me someone out there to wrestle. I don’t care who it is.” This was when the Ultimate Warrior, The Barber came out of his dressing room and knocked down the announcer Howard Finkel. Within 31 seconds, The Barber knocked over Honky Tonk Man, who didn’t even get the chance to remove his jumpsuit. This would certainly be the most memorable moment of SummerSlam 1998.
2. 1991: NUPTIALS ON THE MAT
Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage and Miss Elizabeth looked amazing on the day of their wedding. This could be said to a perfect match made in heaven. Madison Square Garden, New York, where these two got married, was set up a ring where many other wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, Legion of Doom and The Mountie were a part of the wedding. The memorable part of this event is when the Undertaker and Jake Roberts is known as The Snake terrified Elizabeth with a gift box that had a venomous cobra inside. Woah, that’s something that a newlywed bride wouldn’t ever forget!
3. 1992: FAMILY COMBAT
The event that centered the Hart Family is surely one of the moments that we’ll never forget. Bret Hart stood up against his brother-in-law Davey Boy Smith who is known as the British Bulldog for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The fight took place in London, at London’s Wembley Stadium. There were more than 80,000 fans who cheered their countryman and supported Bulldog. As the match ended with the victory of Davey Boy Smith, Bret Hart rejected on shaking hands with the Bulldog. To make him agree to do so, his sister, Diana Hart-Smith persuaded him a lot and told him to act as a real sportsman.
4. 1994: BROTHERS IN A CAGE
The fight of the two brothers, Bret ‘Hit Man’ Hart and Owen was a hit back in 1994. The two brothers had been fighting over months for dividing the large wrestling family. Finally, both of them fought for the title of WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Bret was supported by his brother-in-law British Bulldog, whereas his other brother-in-law and former tag-team partner Jim Neidhart was supporting Owen for the cause. As Bret won the fight by climbing the cage, Owen and Neidhart brought Bret back in the cage and hit him until the otherkin came in to rescue Bret.
5. 1994: UNDERTAKER VS. UNDERTAKER
To watch Undertaker in the ring has always been a pleasure, but having two Undertakers is surely something unusual right? As Undertaker lost a casket match to Yokozuna in January, at the Royal Rumble, he seemed to vanish. There were many rumors about his sights but none were proved to be true. Ted DiBiase known as Million Dollar Man, announced the comeback of Undertaker and told the audience that he has got him back from the Dark Side. Whereas, the longtime manager of Undertaker, Paul Bearer claimed that DiBiase’s charge is false. The two Undertakers challenged each other in the ring at SummerSlam 1994; the original Undertaker won the match and buried the pretender in a coffin.
6. 1998: FUTURE GREATNESS ON DISPLAY
Watching The Rock and Triple H in the ring has been memorable for the fans. The ladder match for WWE Intercontinental Championship between the great wrestlers was a battle that is still remembered with honor. The fight between the two factions, Triple H’s D-Generation X and The Great One’s Nation of Domination was more than a match. Triple H managed to win the match with his ally Chyna’s intervention.
7. 1999: THE GOVERNOR WAS THE REF
Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura, a legend wrestler of WWE, won the elections and got the title of Governor of Minnesota in 1998. The American political community was shocked to witness the results of the elections. Ventura agreed to referee the Triple Threat match in Minneapolis between Stone Cold, Mankind and Triple H. As the match started, Ventura ejected Chyna, the ally of Triple H from the ringside and she low-bowed Mankind and hurled up Shane over the top rope.
8. 2015: JON STEWART ATTACKS JOHN CENA
The retired host of Daily Show, Jon Stewart, has issues with Seth Rollins since the beginning. But as the match against the title WWE World Heavyweight took place between John Cena and Seth Rollins, Stewart crashed the match by entering the ring with a chair. He hit John Cena in the midsection instead of going for Rollins. On the next night of Raw, Stewart explained that he didn’t want Cena to tie Ric Flair’s record.
9. 2016: THE FIRST UNIVERSAL CHAMPION IS CROWNED
On a Monday Night Raw, the title of WWE Universal Championship occurred as the match was held between Seth Rollins and Finn Balor is known as The Demon. Balor was the inaugural kingpin along with Coup de Grace. The celebration of WWE Universe was going on when few realized that Balor has injured his right shoulder whilst he was absorbing a powerbomb into the barricade. He was forced to relinquish after a few days. He is still remembered for being the first WWE Universal titlist.
10. 2018: BECKY BECOMES “THE MAN”
In a Triple Threat match along with Carmella and Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair won the title of WWE Women’s Championship. As Lynch hugged Flair to congratulate her, she snapped out and battered Flair as she hurled her over the table. The audience went crazy for Becky Lynch and applauded loudly. She was then called ‘The Man’ who just gave a tribute to Flair’s Hall of Fame father.
